I was prescribed depakote today. I am an alcoholic. I have to quit drinking cold turkey. Will I get DT's

if u r an alcoholic & have been for a very long time, u can expect some major withdrawals. some can be very serious.

call ur doctor back & explain to him that u r going to quit drinking & that u r worried about the withdrawals. u may even need to be in a detox center so they can watch over u as u go through them.

alcohol & benzo withdrawals r two of the most serious & dangerous withdrawals. i highly recommend detox centers for those who r alcoholics (as in ur case) & those who r coming off of benzos.

i applaud u for taking it seriously & i wish u all the luck in the world. i have been through opiate withdrawals & they were difficult. luckily i was in a detox center.

You need to contact the doctor that gave you the depakote and inform him/her about your drinking..like how long how much and stuff like that. The doctor will them be able to give you a good idea if you will have any DT is or not and maybe able to also give you something to help with them. Good Luck, Wish you the best !!!

The combination can have a very drastic effect on ur liver. Did u discuss ur drinking with ur doctor before this was prescribed? If not, u may need to call the doctor is office to find out what he/she advises u to do. Do not be afraid to discuss this with the doctor. You're not alone. The doctor can help u best when he/she has complete information in order to make decisions about ur care.

You will most likely need to have a liver panel done periodically anyway while on the Depakote. If u have been drinking heavily, & frequently, then, depending on how much u r used to consuming, yes, u could be at risk for DT's.

What are DTs? ive never heard of them. but yes, drinking on medications for your mental health is not a good idea at all. im sorry i cant answer your question but good luck and please stop the drinking. my psychiatrist said alcohol every once in a while is okay but not alot at all. so treat yourself like once a month so you dont go back to being this way :)
